Agreements with Foreign Institutions:

International exchanges aim to foster collaborative research and joint activities with foreign institutions, promoting the mobility of students, faculty, and resources, ultimately enhancing the quality of knowledge.

  1. Scientific collaboration with the University of Porto, Portugal, for research in Heart Failure and Epidemiology.

  2. Agreement with Harvard Medical School, USA, for exchange involving: (1) studies on adaptive mechanisms in heart failure, particularly peripheral vascular reactivity. The role of peripheral circulation in heart failure is increasingly recognized as fundamentally important. This agreement involves the use of non-invasive techniques to characterize peripheral circulation adaptations in heart failure. Participation with the TIMI Group for coordination of international multicenter studies; (2) atherosclerosis; (3) arrhythmia and electrophysiology.

  3. Agreement with Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, USA, for exchange in: (1) Magnetic resonance imaging in acute myocardial infarction. The application of MRI to study ischemic or infarcted human heart muscle is a major scientific and technological innovation; (2) Gene therapy and molecular biology, enabling the planning of more precise therapeutic interventions; (3) Tomographic diagnosis of coronary obstruction; (4) Coronary calcification analysis by tomography.

  4. Collaboration with the NIH, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA (the largest U.S. government research institution), on the development of sodium-23 MRI imaging. Dr. David Bluemke is the NIH partner and Director of Radiology at the NIH.

  5. Agreement with the Università del Sacro Cuore (Center for Clinical Physiology and Hypertension), Milan, Italy, for exchange in human atherosclerosis studies. This agreement aims to investigate the basic mechanisms of human atherosclerotic plaque development through the analysis of plaque samples removed during atherectomy and correlated with clinical presentations.

  9. Scientific collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles, USA, on studies of autonomic regulation and cardiovascular implications, and effects of physical exercise. Collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, USA, through Prof. Katherine Detre, on epidemiological studies related to cardiovascular disease, including statistical study evaluations.

  10. Agreement with the Mayo Clinic Foundation through Profs. Robert Frye and Bernard J. Gersh on comparative studies between coronary and diabetic patients undergoing clinical treatment, surgery, and angioplasty. Long-term follow-up – BARI II-D Study.

  11. Collaboration with the University of Vermont through Prof. David J. Schneider on genetic studies (polymorphisms), cellular inflammation, and coagulation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with or without extracorporeal circulation.

  12. Exchange with Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Prof. Mark E. Molitch recently visited Brazil and gave a lecture on Diabetic Nephropathy; he is part of the BARI 2D Coordinating Center.

  14. Collaboration with Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Prof. Valentin Fuster, in the Freedom study. This is a comparative study group involving diabetic patients with coronary artery disease undergoing surgery or stenting.

  15. Collaboration with the Image Processing and Informatics Lab, University of Southern California, USA, on a joint project to develop a Grid-based infrastructure for medical applications using Internet-2 and RNP-2. This is part of the “Advanced Network for Research and Development of Distributed Systems in Medicine” Project, sponsored by the Brazilian National Research Network (RNP)/Ministry of Science and Technology (with publications in international journals and conferences).

  16.   28. InCor has an agreement with the University of Surrey, England, for research on a new biomarker for atherosclerosis, also involving the Brazilian Fleury laboratory. Senior researchers in the project include Dr. Raul Dias dos Santos Filho (Director of the Clinical Unit of Dyslipidemia), Dr. Maria de Lourdes Higuchi (Director of the Inflammation and Infection Laboratory in Cardiology), and Dr. José Antonio F. Ramires.

  29. Exchange between a group from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, and Prof. Dr. José Eduardo Krieger, Director of the Genetics and Molecular Cardiology Laboratory at InCor, to study a new treatment to restore post-infarction blood flow to the heart muscle. The new technique uses tissue engineering concepts to combine cells and a biopolymeric matrix to prevent death of cells near the infarct area and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels.

  30. Partnership with Erasmus University of Brussels through Prof. Jean Louis Vincent, Department of Intensive Care, and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at InCor and ICESP, coordinated by Prof. Ludhmila Abrahão Hajjar. It involves postgraduate student exchange and joint clinical studies.

Minister Akiba visited the Institute’s care, teaching, and research facilities and endorsed the choice of InCor as a partner for this Japanese government project to disseminate Japan’s medical technology worldwide.
