The graduate student who has fulfilled all regulatory requirements shall request, with authorization from their advisor and approval from the Program Coordinator, the evaluation of the thesis through the Declaration of Eligibility form.
For the thesis presentation, please follow the instructions below regarding the cover and title page:
- Thesis presented to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo, for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Science.
- Program: full name of the program (Cardiology).
- Thesis title: exactly as in the cataloging sheet — see instructions for preparing the cataloging sheet.
- Co-advisorship should only be mentioned if the accreditation has been approved by the Graduate Program Committee (CPG); verify on the Student Record in the Janus system.

Instructions for Filling Out the Suggested Examining Committee Form:
The Suggested Examining Committee form must be sent to this Coordination via email at po[email protected] at least one month before the expected thesis submission date for approval by the CCP.
- When suggesting graduates of the program, the CCP will only accept those who have already published their thesis in an indexed journal.
- Professors must have at least a doctoral degree.
- The Examining Committee must include members who participated in the Qualifying Exam.
The advisor, as a permanent member, will be the Chair of the Examining Committee. The suggestion must include six full names with USP code and institution (IES).
Members suggested without a USP number or with outdated registration must fill out the visiting professor form.
Committee Composition:
Full members:
- 1 internal member: advisors or co-advisors accredited in the program and responsible for a graduate course discipline;
- 1 external member from USP or HC Complex staff but outside the program;
- 1 external member from another institution.
Alternate members:
- 1 internal member: advisors or co-advisors accredited in the program and responsible for a graduate course discipline;
- 1 external member from USP or HC Complex staff but outside the program;
- 1 external member from another institution.

If the advisor is absent or unable to serve, the CPG will appoint a substitute, who may be the co-advisor or a collaborator. Blood relatives of the student cannot be part of the Examining Committee.

English Review Funding:
The program finances two English language reviews of papers through https://www.aje.com/ using the Premium editing service with a normal deadline, up to one year after thesis defense.
The student pays by credit card and later requests reimbursement. To request reimbursement, the student must submit a form attaching the invoice, credit card statement, and payment proof, with advisor approval.
Citation Requirements:
Articles, books, abstracts presented at meetings, and any publication or dissemination resulting wholly or partially from the thesis must cite that they are derived from a doctoral thesis as specified below (Ordinance No. 2309), and the advisor must be listed as an author:

If the article is not published within one year and the student no longer shows interest, the advisor may publish it as the first author.
Thesis Based on Compilation of Articles – Resolution 8300, dated 08/24/2022
The FMUSP Graduate Committee approved norms for presenting dissertations and theses as compilations of articles (Official Letter 0278-11-CPGE).
- Theses must contain at least two articles accepted for publication, with the possibility of including articles under submission.
- Submission dates of the articles must be after the student’s enrollment date.
- Accepted/published articles must relate to the research project submitted to the Graduate Program Committee.
- The student must be first author of at least two accepted articles and co-author of the others.
- The advisor must be co-author of all articles.
- Journals accepting the articles must comply with the program’s current indexing criteria for thesis submission procedures. At least one accepted article must be in a journal rated A4 or higher in Qualis Periódicos Referência.
- Candidates eligible under article 7 of the Graduate Program Regulation (Resolution 7493, March 27, 2018) will have their thesis project evaluated by the Graduate Program Committee and submitted to the Congregation. In this case, items 4, 5, 6, and 7 are not required.
- The thesis structure can be in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French and must include:
- Cover with author name, title, place, and date;
- Back cover with unit name, author name, title, program name, advisor name, place, and date;
- Cataloging sheet;
- Summary in Portuguese;
- Abstract in English;
- Introductory chapter justifying the inclusion of compiled articles;
- Full citation of the compiled articles/manuscripts with respect for Copyright rules;
- Critical analysis chapter synthesizing and discussing contributions of the articles.
Thesis Defense Procedure:
- The thesis evaluation will be a public session not exceeding five hours.
- Public defenses may be conducted remotely via videoconference to facilitate the formation and execution of the Examining Committees (Circular CoPGR 24 2011).
- The student presents the work in up to 60 minutes before the defense.
- Each examiner has 20 minutes to question, with the candidate having 20 minutes to respond or discuss if mutually agreed. Total questioning time must not exceed 40 minutes.
- Each examiner votes “approved” or “disapproved” in a secret session immediately after the defense. The initial presentation does not count toward the vote.
- The candidate is considered qualified if approved by the majority of examiners.
- The Examining Committee will submit the Defense Judgment Minutes to the CCP for acknowledgment and then to the CPG for ratification.
The candidate approved in the thesis defense is entitled to the Doctor of Science in Cardiology diploma, automatically issued along with the academic transcript.
