The Qualifying Exam will consist of the analysis of earned credits and the presentation of the thesis project, which must include: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Partial Results, and References.
In the Qualifying Exam, the student may either pass or fail; no grade or score is assigned.
A student who fails the Qualifying Exam may retake it only once and must consult the Program Regulations for the timeframe to register and complete the new exam.
Suggested Committee for the Qualifying Exam
The suggested Qualifying Exam committee must include a total of 5 members: 3 Full Members and 2 Alternates, and must include at least one Advisor from the Program as a full or alternate member.
The advisor and/or co-advisor may not be part of the examining committee for the Qualifying Exam.
The composition of the Examining Committee must be submitted by the Advisor to the CCP via email: [email protected], fully completed and in Word format, at least 30 (thirty) days before the exam registration date.
Qualifying Exam Registration
The student must check the deadline for registering for the exam (they may register early or on the date listed in the Janus system).
The registration form must be submitted to the Program Office, specifying the desired exam registration date.
After registration, the student will have a deadline—according to the applicable regulations—to complete the exam.

The Qualifying Exam (QE) registration must occur by the time the student has reached 50% of their course duration, and the exam must be completed within 90 days of registration.
a. Registration deadline for PhD students with a Master’s degree: 24 months
b. Registration deadline for Direct PhD students: 24 months
By the time of the exam, the student must have completed 50% of the total required course credits.
Resolution 8300
The Qualifying Exam (QE) registration must occur by the time the student has reached 50% of their course duration, and the exam must be completed within 90 days of registration.

b. Registration deadline for Direct PhD students: 24 months
By the time of the exam, the student must have completed 4 (four) course credits for the PhD program and 12 (twelve) credits for the Direct PhD program.
